While this is a conversion to a static site from the wordpress system, it is also a migration to a more modern OS as well as the conversion.
In order to get everything migrated to the “new way” of maintaining the mailing list, the extraction from wordpress into a easier to maintain site, and a newer mail system, I have to move it in partials. That is probably going to be invisible to everyone simply because I’m doing it on a replica site prior to going live.
I did threaten to do this quite some time ago. When this goes live (as in migrated from the testing site), it will indicate that the site conversion has happened. Of course it does look different and I will have to search for a while to find the original graphics I used for the banner to at least make the header look similar - right now it needs some work.
Side effects of the conversion:
- No longer using mailman for the list, mailman 2 has been deprecated for quite some time now and the effort for mailman 3 is a higher than I want for what is a very low volume list.
- No database for the posts. All text files in markdown and so much easier to manage as well as keep in a version control system.
- Easier to publish, since it is not some web frame editor, just a rsync from the generator output
- Additional features are possible, but this has been a pretty sedate group for a long time. Maybe BSDCan 2026 will get a nod and a boos from here.
